The South End neighbourhood of Boston is changing. Long a bastion of upper-middle class English residents, with large, luxurious homes, the lure of the streetcar suburbs are drawing many out to areas like Roxbury and Back Bay. The vacancies are being filled by Irish families, mostly working-class, and the general tone of the neighbourhood is sliding downhill. Large, single-family homes are giving way to apartments and tenements, and the more upscale businesses are starting to follow the residents out to the suburbs. Like many of Boston’s neighbourhoods, South End is built on land reclaimed by filling in the bay north of the neck.
