South Boston

South Boston, or Southie, is a predominantly working-class Irish neighbourhood, with growing numbers of Polish and Lithuanian immigrants arriving in the area. Family ties are strong in the area, and criminal gangs control large areas of the neighbourhood, though they tend to be involved in minor crime: protection rackets, petty theft, and the like. Because the area is an established Irish neighbourhood, there is some strong entrenched resentment of the Boston Brahmins and their ilk, and a great deal of anger over the NINA signs that are still posted in some help advertisements, and it is not unusual to see graffiti on the South Boston streets proclaiming “Sinn Fein.”
