Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Founded in 1861 to provide training and education designed to keep pace with the rapid development of science and technology, MIT was forced to hold its earliest classes in a rented mercantile hall, thanks to the beginning of the Civil War. Over the past half-century, it has become the preferred site in the United States for vocational training in any job having to deal with technology. Lately, it is also growing a reputation for research and scholarly education that has begun to rival Harvard in the sciences. The penchant of MIT students for involved, inspired pranks has garnered both admiration and opprobrium in the academic fields.
